Physical Well Being
Stress can have a negative impact on physical well being. A divorce is an extremely stressful situation which can lead to very real physical ailments. Additionally, the over burdensome task of managing the numerous aspects of a matrimonial action might create a situation where health is neglected or ignored. Failure to pay attention to yourself and your physical environment may lead to harm.
If you are healthy, you can work towards creating a beneficial lifestyle. However, once your health deteriorates all other concerns take a back seat to the ailments affecting your body.
If you are usually health conscious, continue along this path despite your divorce. Schedule regular visits to your physicians, keep up with your health care regimens (such as medications), maintain your diet and continue your excersize program. A strong body will help you maintain a clear mind and allow you to concentrate on the legal aspects of your case. “Saving time” by neglecting your health is not beneficial. Continued communication with your physicians will allow you to recognize new concerns created by stress and give you the opportunity to handle them effectively.
If you who do not maintain a regular health care regimen, now is a good time to start. Make an appointment with an internist and/or a gynecologist who you trust. Inform the physician about the divorce proceeding in order to receive effective advice about health concerns related to the added stress in your life.
I have found that exercise is a great stress reliever. A quick walk can help clear your mind while benefiting your body. Additionally, movement away from your desk will give you time to decompress and relax during the work day.
Make certain your health insurance is in place. Cobra allows for up to 36 months of coverage under a spouse’s policy post divorce if medical benefits through his insurance were received during the marriage. Cobra relates directly to insurance policies held by companies having 20 or more employees. Premiums will become your responsibility. Cobra provisions can help you avoid a lapse in coverage and give you time to obtain new insurance. If your children are covered under your spouse’s policy they will remain so post divorce pursuant to the same cobra provisions that allow you continued coverage. However, I recommend specific language in your settlement agreement or divorce decree relating to medical insurance.
Your health is your most important asset. It gives you the freedom to live and work effectively. It is easy to neglect your health during a divorce. Use your best efforts to take care of your mind and body. If you are healthy you will be able to more effectively concentrate on the issues involved in your matrimonial action.
